Shipping Container FAQs

Below you’ll find clear answers to the questions customers ask most often when buying a shipping container across the North East of England and Scotland. This page covers delivery, siting, access, security, condensation control, planning considerations and more to help you choose the right container with confidence.

Delivery, Siting and Access

Can you deliver the container in my garden?

Access for a wagon is extremely difficult, however we are happy to look at the possibility with further information being established. Please share photos, measurements from the road to the final position and any tight turns, height limits or overhead lines so we can advise the safest option.

How are containers delivered and unloaded?

Most containers are delivered on HIAB crane lorries that lift the unit off the truck and place it on your prepared base. Clear access, firm ground and safe working space are essential for the crane to set up and operate.

What type of surface do I need to site the container on?

The container will need to be sitting level, such as railway sleepers, tarmac, compacted stone etc. You do not need a full concrete base. We recommend supporting the four corner castings at a minimum to keep the floor dry and the doors square.

How much room does the lorry and crane need?

HIAB vehicles are large and require space to position stabilisers and lift safely. Expect the truck to need good width and overhead clearance for the crane boom. If your site is tight, share exact measurements and we will assess feasibility.

Can you place a container on grass or soil?

Short-term siting on firm, well-drained ground may be possible with suitable supports under the corners. For best results use sleepers, pads, slabs or engineered blocks to create a level base and maintain airflow beneath the floor.

What if access is impossible for a HIAB?

If a standard delivery cannot reach the site, alternatives may include placing the container as close as possible and moving it with plant on private land, or considering a different location. Share details and we will advise options.

Sizes, Spec and Choice

What are the common container sizes?

Standard sizes include 10ft, 20ft and 40ft, all 8ft wide. A standard 20ft is 8ft 6in high, with high cube options typically 9ft 6in. Internal measurements vary slightly by manufacturer.

New vs used, which should I choose?

New (one trip) containers provide a cleaner cosmetic finish and longer service life. Used containers are wind and watertight at lower cost, ideal for general storage. We will match a unit to your budget and intended use.

Do doors open fully and which way do they face on delivery?

Double doors open to approximately 270 degrees on level ground. Let us know if you want the doors facing the cab or the rear so we load for the correct orientation.

Security, Ventilation and Care

How secure are shipping containers?

Built in corten steel with heavy-duty door gear, containers are very secure.

How do I prevent condensation and damp?

Keep the container level, allow airflow under the floor, ventilate, avoid storing wet items and consider anti-condensation roof liner, insulation with vapour barrier or a small dehumidifier for sensitive goods.

What maintenance is required?

Lubricate door hinges and locking cams, keep seals clean, touch up external paint if scratched, sweep floors and check the base remains level so doors operate smoothly.

Approvals, Payments and Lead Times

Do I need planning permission?

Containers are often treated as temporary structures, but requirements vary by location, land use and permanence. Always check with your local planning authority before installation, especially in conservation areas or if the container changes the use of the land.

How quickly can I get a container?

Lead times depend on stock and delivery schedules. Share your postcode and preferred size and we will confirm availability and the earliest delivery window.

What information do you need to quote delivery?

Your postcode, preferred size, site photos, access measurements, surface type and any special instructions such as door orientation or timed delivery.

Buying and Using Your Container

Can you add windows, doors or vents?

Yes, professional modifications such as lock boxes, vents, personnel doors and basic lining are available. At Container Sales (UK) Ltd, unfortunately we do not offer modification services but we can recommend companies that do.

Can a shipping container be moved later?

Yes, provided there is vehicle access and safe lifting space. Keep interiors modular and ensure fixtures are braced so the unit can be relocated by HIAB.

What can I store in a 20ft container?

A 20ft shipping container suits most household contents, stock, tools and equipment when racked efficiently. If you need extra headroom or volume, consider a high cube or 40ft.
